Materials Required for Construction of Yagya Vēdi (These are called Sambhar in Shastras)

  1. Water,
  2. Mud that is collected from the place where boars have dug,
  3. Mud that is collected from the ant hills of white ants,
  4. Sterile soil or soil from desert,
  5. Salted soil from sea shore,
  6. Gravel and
  7. Metal plates or sheets made of Gold, Silver or Copper.

Construction of Vēdi and its comparison with the formation of Earth according to Shāstrās

According to Shathapatha Brāhmanna (11.6.1.6), at the beginning of the formation of Earth everything was in Salila (water or liquid) form. Therefore before construction of Vēdi, water is used to clean the place and wet the ground.

With the interaction of fire with water or liquid form, foam is produced. This foam after interacting with Vāyu (air) and with Angirasa rays (special Sun rays) slowly solidifies into liquid Mud. These Angirasa rays have a different name called Varāha (Boar). Also according to Shāstrās at this time the shape of Earth was like the small mouth of the Boar. To signify this we collect Mud which is dug by Boars and use it for construction of Vēdi.

At this stage of Earth formation the liquid Mud so formed gets dried because of Sun rays. This Mud is compared to the Mud collected by white ants. White ants collect wet Mud from within Earth and use to construct ant hill. After drying in the Sun this Mud becomes just like powdered soil. Therefore Mud from ant hills is collected and used in the construction of Vēdi. This reference can be obtained from Maitrāyanni Samhitha (1.6.3).

On further drying of the dried Mud so formed in the formation of Earth it becomes just like the sand of desert. In order to represent this stage we collect sand from desert and use it in the construction of Vēdi. This reference is also obtained from Maitrāyanni Samhitha (1.6.3).

After this stage of Earth formation the Mud gets heated from the fire inside the Earth and becomes gravel. In order to represent this stage we collect gravel and use it in the construction of Vēdi. This reference is also obtained from Maitrāyanni Samhitha (1.6.3).

After this stage of Earth formation the gravel turns into stones because of excess heat generated inside the Earth. In order to represent this stage we construct the Vēdi with Bricks. If we can make these bricks from the Mud that is collected in the first stage and make them into brick shape and heat it, we can use them in the construction of Vēdi.

After this stage of Earth formation all Metals have been produced inside the Earth. In order to represent this stage we use Metallic plates or Metallic construction on top of the Vēdi construction. Gold is preferred to other metals but if cannot fund the money for Gold, silver or copper can be used.

Other than the above said materials we should not use cement or Aluminum etc.
